Tour of the Hearst Tower
On Wednesday April 26, 2017, supporters of the V&AAF toured the Hearst Tower with Jim Barnes, a Partner at the renowned architecture firm Foster + Partners.
Publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst commissioned a six-storey Art Deco block on Eighth Avenue in the 1920s, anticipating that it would eventually form the base for a tower, though no such scheme was ever advanced.
Seventy years later, Foster + Partners were asked to complete the tower and have successfully blended contemporary architecture in a skyscraper with art deco architecture at its base. The building was the winner of the first LEED Gold award for an office building in New York. The group also visited the Foster + Partners office in the building and were shown various projects in process.
